Missing Choice: Ed Gein? (5.00 / 1) (#2)
by localroger on Sun Aug 5th, 2001 at 06:29:42 PM PST
Where is Ed Gein? Dahmer is by far most interesting on the list but I'd have voted for Gein if he was there. Far and away the sickest pup ever to rob a grave and dine on long-pig, even if he didn't rack up the body count Henry Lee Lucas managed.

I agree (none / 0) (#8)
by iat on Mon Aug 6th, 2001 at 01:28:17 AM PST
And let's not forget that Ed Gein inspired the seminal psycho-with-a-chainsaw film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. How many of the others on this list have inspired a classic movie? - love it or leave it.

you did not include bob berdella. my hometown serial killer. get a book about him and look at the disturbing photos he took of his victims in mid-torture.

Lack of options (none / 0) (#7)

You usually complain that there isn't a Natalie Portman option, so I think we should add one to this poll... - love it or leave it.

it takes a lot to get to me (none / 0) (#11)
by osm on Mon Aug 6th, 2001 at 01:56:09 AM PST
but those pictures were just... really disturbing... this one in particular. he had this guy tied to a table. he had syringes in him which he used to inject windex and other chemicals. he had jumper cables attached to the guy which he used to shock him. i don't know if that's what he was doing the time the picture was taken, but this guy was still alive, with all of this shit attached to him with this look of horror in his eyes. it was chilling.

berdella ran a shop in kansas city called the bizarre bazaar where he sold torture devices and implements of destruction from all over the world and throughout history.

he studied art in college and one of his exhibits was: he gave the viewer an egg and made them walk through this maze with images of death all over the place. he had it setup so at the end, the person would be startled. i'm not sure if he had a live chicken getting its head cut off or a video of it. anyway, the idea was that when startled, the viewer would crush the egg in their hand.

unfortunately, berdella died of a heart attack before he could be properly exterminated.

What does it mean to have a favorite serial killer? That's twisted.

What is twisted is the American culture that spawned so many of these killers.

I hate to break it to ya, but the US doesn't have a monopoly on serial killers.

No (none / 0) (#13)
by dmg on Mon Aug 6th, 2001 at 05:42:16 AM PST
But then, I didn't say it had. I just said that America's culture spawns lots of serial killers.

The European has a population far in excess of the United States (350million vs 248million) and we don't have anything like the number of killers you Americans have.

Perhaps its because America is a more 'anonymous' and 'transient' society. Everyone is always on the move, making it easier to kill people without getting caught.

The high incidence of Christianity is to blame (5.00 / 1) (#14)
by Anonymous Reader on Mon Aug 6th, 2001 at 09:36:12 AM PST
Remember that the doctrine of fundamentalist Christianity (as practiced in the United States) is salvation through faith, not salvation through works. Therefore, the mind of a Christian serial killer works like this: as long as I accept Jesus as my savior, it doesn't matter what I do on this planet, including killing as many people as I possibly can. This nihilistic worldview explains the high serial killer rate among the fundamentalist population.

When was the last time you heard about a Catholic serial killer? Catholicism teaches salvation through works, which is the most healthy worldview for a productive and civilized society. This has been demonstrated time and time again and the Protestants will not allow themselves to be told that the Catholics are right on this issue. Until the Protties learn this lesson, I fear that they will continue murdering as many people as possible.

Last time I checked, Catholics were Christians. :-) Do you have any data to back your claim that the majority of serial killers were fundamentalist Christians? I'll bet this is not true.

Are You Retarded? (none / 0) (#23)
by 6e7a on Tue Aug 7th, 2001 at 06:43:41 PM PST
You must be retarded if you believe that drivel. This followup is a more reasonable argument. Even if Catholics are perverted in some way, they still meet the dictionary requirement for Christian:

One who professes belief in Jesus as Christ or follows the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus

You could argue they have it all wrong, but they still profess a belief in Jesus as Christ ever Sunday, therefore Catholics are Christian.

Zodiac Killer (none / 0) (#16)
by Anonymous Reader on Mon Aug 6th, 2001 at 02:04:09 PM PST
His body count is low (only 5), but I've always found the Zodiac killer to be one of the more interesting ones. You have to get extra credit for talking to the police and the press and still not getting caught.
