GPL goes to court: Part 2

 Author:  Topic:  Posted:
Feb 28, 2002
Here's an update on the court case.

[editor's note by elenchos] In order to express how we all must feel at being pointlessly regaled by these endless tales regarding the "GPL", I have appended a selection from T.S. Eliot's poem "The Waste Land".

GPL goes to court
What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
    Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.

This site is full of censorship. (3.66 / 3) (#1)

So what did you expect, some sort of liberalist "free speech" free-for-all?

Peace and much love...

is a pretty strong word, and not appropriate in the case of this diary entry. Try again.

Just go over to masturbating misfits and browse at -1 to see what happens when the censorship is not applied intelligently.

What about the word 'appended' don't you understand?

You assume I'm a guy? (1.00 / 1) (#7)
by Anonymous Reader on Sat Mar 2nd, 2002 at 01:17:49 PM PST
I think it's the part where the word "replaced" becomes "appended." In other words your credibility is thin.

I'm not part of the "boy's club" and I don't care to be. I'd rather have the truth than your opinion.

No one cares if you're a guy or not. (5.00 / 1) (#8)

Or if you're offended because an "assumption" was made about you. If you don't have anything original to say, and only want to read today's rehash of the same old Lunix cant, go to The reason we discourage that stuff is that everyone has seen it before, knows it backwards and forwards, and we are sick of it.

And, if you aren't sick of it, there are more sites than I care to count that offer what you want.

Now go away.

I think the link was the diary. That appears to be Ms Koochee's style.

As for the rest, you might be interested in knowing that hauntedattics has, in the past, mentioned that she is free of the pollulating Y chromosome.

Li'l Sis: Yo, that's a real grey area. Even by my lax standards.

I use 'buddy' for both men and women. If that offends you, chalk it up to my residency in a city that always uses 'you guys' for the second person plural, even when the pair or group addressed is all female.

You say that elenchos removed part of the diary entry. Now who's making assumptions? I prefer to take him at his word when he says 'appended.' As for my credibility, it's always been pretty thin. Just like my dainty, ladylike and incredibly well-shaped ankles.

Doesn't matter. (1.00 / 1) (#11)

I have no idea of your credibility, hauntedattics. I speak to the credibility of this site and the people who run it. There are lots of examples of "improving" things with editorial comments and deletions. There are lots of reasons not to take people seriously and it annoys me when someone with something legitimate to say is censored. I assumed there was more to this diary to read that elenchos had deleted because he's "bored" with it. I could be wrong but lurking for a while tells me I'm not.

But you know I'm not ashamed to admit it... (5.00 / 1) (#12)

...when I delete things, or change them. If I had done so, I would have said it. All I did was add some depressing poetry at the end, because that's all I felt like doing. I'm not saying that the diary was not cut; I have no idea what other editors might have done ahead of me. We don't check up on each other or keep records, so anything is possible. That's how it is.

What is it that you think you're missing? You actually think this diary might have contained anything different than what you find every day at the Register? Or

As this is a weblog based on scoop code I expected an open forum discussion. Since you clearly have no interest in free speech why support open posting? Publish html blocks of whatever tripe you consider news and drop the pretense of a forum.

Yes! (5.00 / 3) (#15)

Haven't I been saying that all along? The 1# thing wrong with it the users. Who let all these people in? Get rid of them NOW!

Some day they will listen to me and make this a closed site. It's gotten to be like a bus station, if you want to know the truth. But the other editors seem to have an incredibly high tolerance for riff raff.

As far as your claims about our "code", would you be so kind as to cease and desist your hacking? Our "code" as you call it is secret and proprietary, and you have no business breaking into our servers to find out what we are running. I'm trying to be nice about this, but if you keep it up, we can and will report your IP Token to the FBI.

Look, this site is not public property. The owners of it can do whatever the hell they want. If you don't like it, you can either get into a pissing contest with the editors (which admittedly can be pretty darned fun) or you can fuck right off.

In your case, I'd recommend the second option. Think of it as good general advice that you can apply to all aspects of your life.
